What's in the Box: El Paraiso and Hamasho Washed

Ernedis Rodriguez

Ernedis Rodriguez

Ernedis is a longtime specialty producer and his farm is quite advanced when it comes to quality and environmental sustainability.

We have two stunning micro-lots this month for our single origin subscribers. These are top notch lots from star producers in Colombia and Ethiopia. If you have had our Ethiopia Hamasho Natural then this month you get to try the washed process version of that coffee, grown in the highlands of Bensa, Sidama. This is a subscriber exclusive coffee, so if you have been considering jumping on the monthly box program, take note! As a subscriber, you'll get access to one-time limited releases.

El Paraiso from Ernedis Rodriguez is a classic washed Caturra packed with sweetness and clarity. If you haven’t had El Paraiso before, now’s the time! We love the Caturra variety he produces on his farm. It is bright and juicy with a tropical fruit profile; we taste tangerine, acai berry, and cane sugar.

Ernedis is a longtime specialty producer and his farm is quite advanced when it comes to quality and environmental sustainability. Finca El Paraiso in Huila, Colombia is a picturesque farm nestled high up on a mountain ridge with steep slopes overlooking the beautiful Magdalena River Valley. Ernedis intends to keep his farm true to its name—a paradise—so he is constantly finding ways to farm and process his coffee in a way that’s harmonious with nature. Recently, he invested in an eco-pulper, which uses less water to de-pulp the coffee and, as a result, reduces contamination to the environment. The pulp is composted in basins, so there is no contact with the soil, and the pulp becomes useful organic fertilizer for the farm—a win-win for all. He is a true visionary when it comes to coffee, and someone whose coffee we are honored to roast.

Hamasho

Coffee in this area is grown at staggering heights of 2,300 meters above sea level, resulting in a very dense bean that is crammed full of delicious acidity and sweetness.

Hamasho is the best washed process Ethiopia we have tasted this year, hands down, so we are bummed we didn’t buy more. Lucky for you if you are a single origin box subscriber! Our plan was to highlight the natural Hamasho this year, but this washed lot stands out with a sweet and delicate profile of fresh peaches, sweet meyer lemons, and flowers. While the natural is a little winey with cooked berry flavors, the washed is more reminiscent of fresh picked fruits. Daye Bensa is the producer behind this lot, they are an award-winning group. Coffee in this area is grown at staggering heights of 2,300 meters above sea level, resulting in a very dense bean that is crammed full of delicious acidity and sweetness. This is a community lot produced by many surrounding smallholder farmers who deliver their cherry to the Hamasho station.
